Upendra Baxi was born on 9th November, 1938.
Baxi earned his LLB degree from Rajkot (South Gujarat) University.
He holds LL.M. degrees from the University of Bombay and the University of California, Berkeley.
Additionally, he holds a degree of Doctorate of Juristic Sciences (S.J.D.) from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Baxi taught law at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, where he served as the Dean from 1975 to 1978.
He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gujarat from 1982 to 1985.
Thereafter, he served as Vice- Chancellor of the University of Delhi from 1990-1994.
He has also served as Professor of Law in Development at the University of Warwick (UK).
Prof. Baxi has also taught various courses at the Universities of Sydney, Duke University,
the American University, the New York University Law School’s Global Law Program and the University of Toronto.
He was a former Ford Foundation Professor of Human Rights at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata.
He has also served as the honorary Director (research) of the Indian Law Institute ( 1985–1988) and as the President of the Indian Society of International Law (1992–1995).
Prof. Baxi's areas of special expertise in teaching and research include comparative constitutionalism,
social theory of human rights, responsibilities in corporate governance and relating to human rights.
